This poor little owl is very stressed–the puffy display is what they do to frighten off predators, which the big owl is. I feel sorry for him.

It’s a White-faced Scops Owl, just so people know.
No Cedar - The reason why the smaller White-faced Scops Owl “puffs up” is to display dominance of his “territory” as a way to intimidate or scare off the African Grass-owl. When the White-faced Scops Owl “shrinks” THAT is it’s sign that it is frightened torwords larger owls such as the Verreaux’s Eagle Owl.

Thank you Phleborrhagia! I thought he looked pretty stressed either way, and birds I am familiar with make themselves big to scare predators, but I like to know the facts so I appreciate your correction. He really does look very stressed when “shrinking”,and they made him “shrink” on this show too. I wish people wouldn’t treat animals/birds as toys like this show does, it can be cruel. How would we like to be stressed and then have people laugh at us?

No problem Cedar - I particually enjoyed the part when the White-faced Scops Owl first sees the Verreaux’s Eagle Owl and goes “OH S*$#!” flaps his wings and looks around before shrinking. It’s not really cruel to show a natural defensive posture (or defense mechanism) of an animal when it does no harm to it in doing so, so I don’t have a problem with that (all the White-faced Scops Owl is doing is “pulling down” on it’s feathers and “sucking in his gut” while turning to it’s side to achieve the “shinked” look, there’s minimal stress to the animal in doing so) - it’s the same thing as having animals on talkshows; animals aren’t being harmed or being put in harms way - which is why they had the two owls seperated at such a great distance. Had they not done so the two would’ve probably fought over the perch, or the White-faced Scops Owl would’ve tried to fly away if the other came closer to it or injured itself in the process because it was lashed to the post of the perch, which would’ve cause real stress to the animal.
