FINALLY - TV in Japan Inspiration Endurance (AKA Za Gaman) Appears Online
A long while ago now, I did an interview with the Wall Street Journal about TV in Japan.
In that article, wherein I was asked exactly why I do what I do here, I mentioned that as a young child I was exposed to the show (via videotape) Endurance from the BBC and was never the same again. It was a collection of Japanese gameshow clips (from the Japanese show Za Gaman) that basically turned torture into entertainment but not at all nasty, in fact the whole thing turned out to feel innocent, child-like and hilarious. Which is exactly why I love Japanese TV.
Anyways, I’ve been looking for it both on video or online for a couple years now. Thanks to YouTuber A List of Lists, a sizeable clip of it is now up on YouTube. I’d love to see more so if you’ve got tapes, send me an email at gavin(dot)purcell(at)yahoo(dot)com and I’ll see what we can do about getting them online.
Wow, what a crazy show. Too bad that it would never happen in the states.

Endurance was actually on the ITV programme Clive James On Television, and then Tarrant on TV. There was an episode of the former on UKNova a while back.
