Boys Do Synchronized Swimming?!
Yes. Yes, they do. In Dramaland everything is possible but no one can kiss well. These are the two basic truths I have come to accept.
Waterboys was a movie that came out in Japan around 2001. It proved so successful that it spawned not one but TWO drama adaptions. (Yet, I think it should really be one and a half as the second drama adaption was basically the same as the first but done with different actors.)
The premise is almost ludicrously simple. Some high school boys want to start a men’s synchronized swimming club at their school. Somehow this causes mass panic among the faculty and they fight for the rights of their club while learning about life, love, and friendship. We’re halfway to a Hallmark moment in this entry so I’ll just say that it’s more interesting than I make it sound.
There are also old men crossdressers who give the boys advice. That’s both a warning and a promise of what’s to come.
Clip from the movie (fire BAD, water DANGEROUS):
Clip from the first part of the first episode of the first drama (with subtitles!):

I watched the movie some years ago as fansub. It’s simply hilarious, if you like funny japanese movies give this one a try, you won’t be disappointed :)

I LOVED Waterboys! We watched it in my Japanese class and everyone liked it so much that we traded the DVD around for the rest of the semester. Sensei had to ask for it back on the last day of class.

Ahh… I remember watching this one my plane ride to Hong Kong and everyone was like laughing at the same time when the Sato’s hair caught on fire. No doubt one of the most hilarious moment I said in a Japanese movie. Also, just a sidenote. The song “Niji” is really good too, that is from the dorama version.

In all seriousness: Do you think this series has anything to do with the Gay Agenda crossing international waters to Japan?
Visual kei fashion disturbs me, and there have been many series about warm-and-fuzzy “men” in recent years, not to mention the “boyish” pop stars; but I haven’t seen the same kind of gay-intensive programming that we have in America.
Do you think the crossdresser characters are there for laughs and are therefore anti-gay, or are they pro-gay incursions on the Japanese lifestyle?
