Celebrity TV in Japan: Nicolas Cage Entertains at the SMAP SMAP Bistro

While in town to promote Ghost Rider, Nicolas Cage stopped by the SMAPXSMAP Bistro for some promotion and some comic book philosophizing.

While Cage’s voice may put you to sleep, if you keep listening you can actually tell that he does know a little bit about Japanese pop culture. I actually enjoy seeing American celebrities being interviewed on Japanese TV because it’s such a foreign environment for them that they have a hard time keeping up any sort of fake sheen. Nicolas Cage does pretty well here.

However, everyone seems lost when you put them on live TV and they need to speak through a translator. There’s nothing worse than having to do that nod where you’re pretending to understand what someone is saying and then you turn to the translator to get the real answer.

Also, it’s weird (and yet strangely intriguing) to intersperse shots of celebrity jibberjabber with meat being sliced. Maybe they should try that on Access Hollywood.

Parts Two & Three after the jump in which SMAP Ghost Rider shows up. Not to be missed.

Part Two: Nicolas Cage tells us he’s never eaten in public before as he covers his face while chewing. Very odd. Also, he compliments the chefs on the lettuce. Nice. Then, SMAP Ghost Rider at 07:38!

Part Three: More hand covering eating. Does Nic have something wrong with his teeth? Then SMAP Ghost Rider delivers Ghost Rider flambe. Then, at 2:38 Nic goes behind his jacket. To eat. On TV. In Japan.

Thanks to YouTuber Takuko for the upload!

Uh… why is he covering his mouth when he eats?

  2. Ben says:

Good question. Why does Cage cover his month when he eats?

  3. JewWario says:

Looks like he’s embarassed to open his mouth and chew in front of them… never eaten in public before? Oh well… celebrities…

  4. Vinnie says:

It’s to show respect to your hosts. I see you do not have that kind of respect in America.

  5. Dave Silva says:

Actually, down here it is disrespectful to cover your mouth when you eat. Heck, it’s downright rude. People will think that the person eating thinks the food is nasty.

Of course, I’m in Mexico, so what do I know.

When I lived in Korea in the late 90s, I remember being really weirded out by ladies who’d cover their mouths to laugh. I think Nic’s just following up in that. It’s just real polite like.

BTW, welcome Best Week Ever visitors!

  7. Kellie says:

I think it is so funny that he covers his mouth. And I highly doubt he hasn’t eaten in public before, but I absolutly LOVE Nicolas Cage!!! Props on the story. Thanks

  8. Steve says:

I really feel sorry for him, he has totally blown his chances of getting any film role where he’ll have to eat infront of camera, I’ve heard of celeb making outlandish demands but…..do watch me eat…well that just wwweeeerid

I saw this full episode and actually the staff and crew of SmapxSmap found it really strange that he was covering his mouth. Nicolas Cage said that it’s because he’s never ate in public before. But it doesn’t have anything to do with it being more culturally correct to cover your mouth in Japan. Infact, it would be considered rude to cover your mouth when eating.

SMAP was nearly making a joke of it too… one of them said ‘it looks like he is performing a magic act’ - as if he wasn’t really putting the food in his mouth! anyway - it came off as being downright weird. i think it made Cage look pretentious.
