What else but a Trick for April Fool’s Day?
In honor of April Fool’s Day I thought I would do a review of my favorite multipart series:Trick. Trick 1, 2, and 3 each have different things to recommend them, but I’ll try to keep this short and sweet.
Trick:
We get introduced to our main characters, Yamada Naoko (Nakama Yukie) a struggling magician whose stage presence seems to put people to sleep rather than entertain them, and Ueda Jiro (Abe Hiroshi) an egotistical and cowardly physics professor who wishes to debunk every supernatural phenomenon as merely tricks. Together they travel Japan and expose gurus and ghost towns.
This duo and their supporting cast (two incompetent cops, and Naoko’s enigmatic mother) are strong on the comedy with some mystery thrown in to keep you guessing. Each story arc takes a few episodes and even if the answers sometimes don’t make sense, it’s the journey to get there that’s all the fun. If you like watching those shows where they give away the secrets of great magicians then you’ll probably enjoy this series.
An introduction, of sorts (with English subs!):
Trick 2:
Featuring longer story arcs, this series basically takes it for granted that you’re familiar with the characters and their interactions with one another. If you enjoyed Trick then you’ll enjoy Trick 2, which feels more like an extension of the first series rather than adding anything new to the character development.
Trick 3:
Continuing on the same successful formula, this series gives you more mysteries as well as an ending as conclusive as you could hope for. I’m going to assume that if you lasted through the first two series then you’ll be happy to give this one a try too and find out what lies in store for a wily magician and a tenacious yet bungling professor.
Curiosity may concuss the cat:
And why yes, there’s more. Two movies more. April Fool’s Day presents abound, enjoy everyone!
