Samurai Sword Slices Egg in Slow Motion Using High Speed Camera
God, how I love the Phantom camera. Who knew such mundane things would look so amazingly awesome when filmed with high speed film and then played back in slow motion.
Now, Nobby Tech, a Japanese company that sells the very expensive camera, has decided to make their own videos to showcase what the thing can do. Even better, those videos involve samurai swords.
Egg + Samurai Sword
Two More Videos After the Jump
Green Tea In Plastic Bottle + Samurai Sword
Tomato + Samurai Sword

Samurai swords must be so useful for cooking!

[...] “Ik schil alles met een samuraizwaard” Wie kan deze onsterfelijke quote vergeten van onze oude idool, Hans Teeuwen? Zeker niet als je dan dergelijke reclame(nota bene)filmpjes ziet. Een geweldige manier om een high speed camera te promoten volgens mij! [...]

I can just imagine a tomato running toward a samurai in a field, and then stopping, not even knowing he’s been cut until he splits in two :p

Whoa. That… is… cool. Especially love the one of the egg. I’m starting to believe all those depictions of samurai violence in films and comic books.

There is something suspiciously wrong with the egg video. Notice the smooth motion of the egg, and the choppy motion of the man in the background. If not faked, this video is at least a composite from two different cameras.
April 1st, 2007 at 6:03 pm
my nipples are hard after watching these…hot!
April 2nd, 2007 at 4:21 am
anonymous—you are right it does appear to be fake
April 2nd, 2007 at 1:40 pm
Mimi Rogers sucks!
April 3rd, 2007 at 12:50 am
Actually, it’s not fake. Due to the arc made while swing the sword, the sword tip travels much faster than the persons hand holding the sword. Therefore, in slo-mo, the hands look choppy while the sword tip looks to be moving very smoothly.
April 3rd, 2007 at 6:38 am
Jeez, does photographic oddity on the internet have some amateur sleuth going on about how it has to be fake? This technology has been around since the early eighties (remember the cover to that Golden Earring album?). Why on earth would a company that makes high speed cameras bother to fake something like this?
April 3rd, 2007 at 8:31 pm
Whatever it is, it’s just amazing :) Now I don’t know if it’s fake or real thing, but I loved the slow motion effect and the way tomato was sliced in two while the upper portion seems to have no knowledge about what’s happening beneath it.

April 4th, 2007 at 4:33 pm
It’s amazing what a sword can do with the right sword holder! - Also in mind “have” we forgett our history:
“There is but one way to know the truth, and that is not a golden one.
It is fraught with toil and sacrifice and perhaps ridicule. The seeker
of the truth must be fearless, he/she must not be afraid to enter the
innermost holies of holies, and to tear down the veils of superstition
that hang about any human and so-called divine institution. It is the
truth that makes men & woman free. If the truth tears down every church and
government under the sun, let the truth be known and this truth only
will be known when men cease to swallow the capsules of ancient
doctors of divinities and politics; and when men begin to seek the
truth in the records of history, politics, religion, and science.”

Once the egg has been sliced, there are no more forces acting on the egg, except gravity and air resistance, so its motion will be smooth, in contrast to the swordsperson, whose body is still adjusting the the katana’s momentum.

You people are ridiculous with these comments. You obviously have no idea about these swords and absolutely no RESPECT for the Samuri, the art of the sword, what goes into making a true Samuri sword and Bushido.
