Big In Japan (Right Now): The Tarako Cupie Girls
WARNING: The following clips have taken over my life here and I am now forced to share them with the rest of the world. Watch at your own risk.
The Tarako Cupie Girls (my name for them) are the newest spokespeople for a Japanese company which sells spaghetti noodles with cod roe (eggs). At least I think that’s what it’s for. But, really, what it’s for isn’t important. It’s the song and dance (and odd hats) that will grab you and not let you go.
Go ahead. Watch it again. If you dare.
These girls have become a national obession here. I mean like giant displays in Shibuya where the song blares out of speakers and they sell their hypnotic pop messages on CD. They’ve been featured on a number of TV shows, including one I watched yesterday morning where they performed the song/dance number live. YouTube has acknowledged my obession and provided me (and therefore you) with that exact performance.
Does something seem shocking familiar about all of this? Like you might remember the song from somewhere? Like from here? You’re be right. I blogged this commercial last July for Tarako and only last night connected it in my head.
The Tarako people may be some of the most insanely smart ad people in the world. Shockingly weird and yet so amazingly cute, I will today purchase one of thier CDs because I cannot resist. I am going to pay nearly $30 to listen to an ad. And I will love it.
Another of their commercials for good measure:
oh my god that song will not get out OF MY HEAAAAAAAAD!!!

Addictive, very addictive.
September 11th, 2006 at 10:45 am
In case anyone wants to look up more info about those two girls… they go by the name, “Kigurumi”
That’s Tarako (sacks of cod roe) on their head… it sounds odd but I don’t think it’s that odd to their target audience…
September 11th, 2006 at 11:32 am
Stuck in my head too… and it’s one of those songs that doesn’t really seem to have any end to it.
September 11th, 2006 at 2:00 pm
this is so cute

This might just be my particular scrollwheel mouse, but there’s a weird effect when you use your scrollwheel and look at the third video’s thumbnail, with its rows of dolls. @_@

i 2nd the dangermouse comment. maybe get a lil dangerdoom action with it too. got an email for either of them? might be able to toss it across.

I know that Morning Musume has also released some songs as commercials and tracks on CDs (Glico Mousse Pocky). Maybe American artists are just a little less straighforward about their endorsements.
September 11th, 2006 at 8:16 pm
Yea, i’m just not feeling it.
September 11th, 2006 at 8:21 pm
at 0:37 into this, there’s a Hanna-Barbera “feet skidding” sound effect, like when Fred puts on the brakes, or Scooby and Shaggy are sliding into a room with a scary monster.
My question: why?

answer: why not?

Serious question here: how long are the ads in Japan??? Here, we rarely see 60-second ads on TV, most of them are 15 or 30 seconds long.
It reminds me an old ad when I was in High school, everybody was singing the song “Oh, dékado dékado dékado…”
September 11th, 2006 at 10:10 pm
To everyone that keeps asking about the ads, just look at past ad posts, they are shorts ads just like in your country.

Three days and counting. Still in my head. And I haven’t even gone out yet.
Thanks everyone for visiting BTW. I’ll try to update again later tonight but I’m extremely busy and may not be able to get to it immediately.
There’s so much more here than I even realized. Like Walruses that talk on cell-phones. More on that later.

Is it just me, or does their commercial seem somehow reminescent of, I dunno, Catherine Denueve in 8 Women? Just a spontaneous song and dance in the middle of everyday life? Not that I’d just break down into dance when I’m crossing the street or anything…
September 12th, 2006 at 12:27 am
That is creepy. Damn creepy. And creepily awesome. Damn awesome.

I think everyone who has watched it 60 times, just has a thing for asian girls.lol

It’s no newsflash that kids are cute! It’s fun but not addictive. My question: why can’t you people just say you don’t like the ad without making comments like “Get a life!”? Christ. Getting vicious over something like this is just wrong and more than a little odd.
September 12th, 2006 at 10:22 am
Japan is truly a strange country, but whats even stranger is this is probly the most normal commercial out in japan. i seen this one jap commercial where a life size talking fish is pitching laundry detergent. got to hand it to them, here in the states commercials are boring and u switch the channel, but wouldnt u watch a life size talking fish!?
September 12th, 2006 at 11:07 am
Don’t get it. It’s no more or less annoying than a campfire song. Maybe you have to be into japanese culture to really be affected by this.

Isn’t it supposed to be just one egg on each small head? and the Kewpie eggs are each just one egg, I believe. The best is the TV presenters dancing ecstatically around and applauding in the second clip.
Agreed with all. It is beautiful, it is boring, it is awesome, I cannot stop thinking about it. I want to stop thinking about it. (”Taaaa-rako!”) it is fun to practice reading Japanese (it’s going too fast!) (”Taaa, rako!”)
“watch again,” I think.

What I find most fascinating about this commercial is that Western culture tanako tanako tsuki tsuki tanako
September 12th, 2006 at 1:24 pm
Kewpie is a company that sells sauces - they began with mayonnaise and eventually expanded into pasta sauces too. Their company character is a Kewpie doll - hence the Kewpie faces on the roe sacks.
We`ve been really big fans of the whole Tarako movement ever since the first commercial - it`s the ring for our cell phones, and even our normal home phone. The sauce itself is great too.
The song is addictive, but not overly cheerful. It has a sort of dark melody to it, which really fit with the advancing lines of tarako.
The girls aren`t exactly spokespeople - they`re the “group” that performed the original song, which was only intended to be a short commercial song. It caught on and Kewpie was bombarded with people wanting the cd, etc. They FINALLY got around to releasing it - at this point it`s no longer an advertisement.
(Yeah, I live in Japan.)
September 12th, 2006 at 1:26 pm
Do you think the Lavern and Shirley reference was intentional? (When they’re faces are just above the moving cupies it looks like the opening to Lavern and Shirley)

For the people perplexed by the popularity of this video, I think the answer is that it’s NOT the “Japanese” that’s turning people on. It’s more the metro/French/European kitsch.
A couple of comments stood out:
1. “Why do I feel like they should be singing inside a radiator inside some brillo-headed loser’s apartment in an industrial wasteland?” (Eraserhead)
2. “Is it just me, or does their commercial seem somehow reminescent of, I dunno, Catherine Denueve in 8 Women? Just a spontaneous song and dance in the middle of everyday life? Not that I’d just break down into dance when I’m crossing the street or anything…”
I think people are liking this for the same reason they like Amelie, and I’d further venture that most of these people don’t even like regular Japanese commercials. Or they “like” them only in that they’re easy to make fun of, whereas they REALLY like this.
French New Wave cinema can be a great introduction for film buffs who might later get into Japanese film and television. There certainly is a lot of that influence evident in Japanese media. There just comes a point, though, where fans of European stuff are over “there” and fans of Japanese stuff are over “here”. You know? I’m thinking the people who like this video are a little over “there” on the opposite side of the room from me.
Personally, I’d rather see Strong Machine 2 beat the hell out of these girls in BULLET TIME while pixies and unicorns spontaneously catch fire.

On the first viewing I got bored and wondered what the deal was. That was yesterday. Today I came back and watched it three times. Hot damn.
I’m glad I’m not the only one that saw this and picked up a big French influence. That made it less Japanese weird and gave it that hint of something darker underneath.
Ok, one more viewing before bed and that is it.

Am I the only one to see this commercial as one long exercise in subliminal phallic symbolism? I mean, one girl has a an erect member hat and the other a flacid member hat. The little dolls are a field of erections waving back and forth. Then you have the girls cranking rotating erections. Given the Japanese penchant for sexual motifs that strike those of us in other cultures as weirdly depraved — school girl lust being the least of it — I wouldn’t rule out that this ad has a sexual undertone. But then maybe it is just late and I’m imagining things.

>Yes you are, and obviously your mind is trapped in the fucking gutter too. You have the right to >speak your mind, but try to speak intelligently.
Okay, I’ll try to speak intelligently enough for you to get what I’m saying. To telegraph the argument: Freud. (Heard of him?) Psychoiogy. (Familiar with that?) The Unconscious. (Know what that’s about?) Subliminal influence via charged symbols and metaphors. (Aware of the last 80 years of psychological influence? From Leni Riefenstahl to Madison Avenue?) Ad Agencies. (Hardly neutral purveyors of cuteness.) Acutely conscious playing to unconscious desires and impulses on part of viewer. Transfer of strong psychic charge (from the merging of innocence and guilt in ambiguous ad) to ad client’s product. A strong response is invoked. Pavlovian perhaps. (Heard of Pavlov?) Must watch ad repeatedly. Job well done.
Oh, sorry to ruffle feathers. Please return to slumber.

A few points. First, having a talent on a morning TV show isn’t proof of a monstrous popularity explosion. Second, that music video isn’t a TV commercial. It is a promotional video designed to be played on a continous loop in a grocery display endcap. If you go to many grocery stores in Japan, they will have that video playing on an endcap of an aisle where the Tarako Spaghetti topping thing is sold. I consider myself lucky that most grocery stores I shop at are playing the local baseball team’s theme song on a continous loop that blocks out all other songs. I dug the odd Kewpie doll commercial, but I don’t really care for the two girls singing gimmick. I prefer that weird “Poscon poscon nuyoi nuyoi” that is just pure nonsense.

You just must understand this kawaii culture and then OK! you’ll know why you liked it. Don’t deny it: it’s f*ucking good (and the producer’s job has been really really well done).

has google already started restricting you tube content? the last 2 movies don’t play anymore
October 19th, 2006 at 3:03 pm
I thought this was a clever song when it first came out. For some reason it reminds me of Nightmare before Christmas. (which is also hugely popular here in the twilight zone, Japan).
I used to enjoy the song when I heard it on the radio. (and I don’t own a radio) then I started hearing it on TV, shopping malls, stores, streets. It finally got to me and I’d can’t get it out of my head! I want it out.
It’s soo annoying! on You tube it’s just there to watch. But things are different when you’re force fed this crap all day long while millions on mindless drones are seemingly enjoying it, till the next annoying fad comes along?
Bitter? Upset no.. just getting tired of listening to it through the window of my padded room!

Not cod roe, Bob. Those are cod OVARIES! You buy them in Japan, cut them open and the tarako (cod roe) pours out!

[...] Monday, January 8th, 2007 in Uncategorized I was looking for Japanese motifs for an art project and m across this blog entry It’s about Tarako. Apearantly adds for Tarako pollock roe pasta sauce have become a fad in Japan. Tarako released a Christmas special add, and lots of toys, mps players etc are being sold. Anyway for the past few days I’ve had to see the commercial. I’ve posted some of the youtube video’s here pretty much so I can see them over and over again. I’m sure once you’ve seen them you’ll understand. [...]

I’ve got an Amazon gift certificate burning holes in my pocket,
and I want to get the most bang for my buck.
Enter the Secret Amazon Web Pages:
http://tinyurl.com/38sojf
This is where you’re going to find the “latest sales, rebates, and limited-time offers” from
Amazon, and you can score some pretty deep discounts if you’re a savvy shopper.
Next, there’s the special Sale link. This is open every Friday, and ONLY on Fridays.
You can find the same good discounts here as you would in hidden Deals, although some
Fridays you can really get lucky and make off like an Amazon bandit - I’ve seen discounts
there as low as 75% off sticker price.
