Even More Gaki no Tsukai - Plus Matsumoto Hitoshi is God

This is how you play Russian Roulette. With cards instead of guns. And dudes in smiley-faced body suits instead of bullets. On TV. In Japan.

Matsumoto HitoshiAnd, I’d like to take a moment to profess my supreme appreciation for Matsumoto Hitoshi. He may be the finest actor/comedian of his generation. He certainly knows how to take a lemon-like situation and make with it something like lemonade.

Cheers to you, Gavin. In a few short months you have discovered something that I discovered about 12 years ago when I lived in Japan and learned a lot of Japanese watching TV in Japan. What I figured out is that Matsumoto Hitoshi (or Hitoshi Matsumoto, or Ma-chan) is not only the funniest guy in Japan, he might be the funniest guy in the world. I am happy to debate this topic with YouTube evidence…but in the last decade (and these guys have been a duo since elementary school, some 30 plus years ago) I have spent probably 500 hours laughing outloud at their work, and I can’t say that about ANY other comedian. (This is across Matumoto’s own DVD specials [5 hours], the Gaki no Tsukai specials [12 hours] and their regular shows, Gottu ‘A’ Kanji, Downtown DX, and HEY! HEY! HEY! [250, 100, and 150 hours at least, repectively]).

I think the most brilliant part is in the middle when everyone is telling him happy birthday. . . and subsequently get him beaten for it.

Lauds to Matsumoto, truly. What a sucky way to start a birthday.

Does anyone know where you can get the DVDs of all this? These have to be the funniest thing I’ve ever seen, and I don’t even know Japanese!

Gachapin July 16th, 2006 at 4:06 pm

i grew up in japan, and i have to tell you how happy i am to know that non-japanese people are also able to appreciate Matsumoto’s humor.

as for the question about the DVD’s, if you live in the U.S. in a major city like L.A. or N.Y., you can visit one of the local Japanese supermarkets (Mitsuwa or Nijiya). They usually have a DVD store where they sell DVD’s of Japanese TV shows for pretty cheap (probably illegally, but oh well…)

Yo Gachapin,

I live in LA and would love to know where I can go to pick these up. Any specific addresses?

As always, thanks for reading.

Hey, I was wondering if they have any Downtown merchandise (shirts, etc.)? I’m sure they do, since they’ve been the cornerstone of Japanese comedy for 20+ years.

I definitely, definitely will give my money to these people in exchange of original DVD’s, specially if they have english subs. Thanks to the people who posted links to buy DVD’s!

H December 13th, 2007 at 12:14 pm

they sell the originals on yesasia.com and cdjapan.co.jp (english speaking sites), although unfortunately for some there are no eng subs. I’m planning on buying all of them although they’re about 60 bucks each. :/
